Chapter Ten
I managed to make it up the three steps to my front porch, but only with Colin’s help.
“I still think you should see a doctor,” he insisted, taking the keys from my hand and unlocking the front door.
“Thanks,” I said, trying to smile through the pain. “I just need to get off my feet for a few hours.”
“I hate to leave you like this,” he sighed. “Is there someone who can come and stay with you?”
It was difficult to stand, so I leaned my shoulder against the wall. “Colin, I just twisted my ankle a little. I’ll be okay.”
This was a side of Colin that I hadn’t seen since we were kids. It was the Colin that actually cared.
“You should talk to CSI and ask if they took those glasses from the Bish trailer. They should be checked for prints.”
He looked baffled. “Glasses?”
I nodded. “Don’t you remember? Heather said there were three glasses on the kitchen table when there should have only been two. It might be nothing, but it couldn’t hurt to look for prints.”
“That’s right.” Colin nodded, his confusion vanishing. “The glasses totally slipped my mind. I’d intended to have that checked out.”
“And dragging the pond?” I asked, hopefully.
“I’ll bring it up to local law enforcement. At this point, they’ll have to be the ones to authorize it since we don’t have any solid leads that point us in that direction.”
Frowning, I turned away. “I know what I saw.”
Taking a deep breath, Colin exhaled loudly. “I believe you think you saw something.”
It didn’t make much sense to stand in the doorway and argue with him. “Thanks for bringing me home.”
Colin nodded. “I’ll keep you up to date on any new developments.”
Closing the door, I hobbled to the window and watched as Colin drove away. Seeing him leave brought on a feeling of loneliness that I hadn’t felt for a long time.
The feeling of being alone didn’t bother me, most of the time. I wasn’t close to anyone, except for maybe Liv. It wasn’t like I wasn’t accustomed to being alone.
Why did it bother me all of a sudden?
Turning from the window, I hobbled my way to the bathroom. Tonight I opted for a long hot bath instead of a shower. Getting in and out of the tub might be a chore but not nearly as difficult as trying to shower while standing on one leg.
While I waited for the tub to fill, I made my way into the kitchen for some numbing medication, in the form of a double shot of JD.
It burned going down but it wasn’t long before it took the edge of the pain. Returning the bottle to its place on top of the old fridge, I wondered if maybe my reliance on old Jack might be getting out of hand.
After Karl’s disappearance and my father’s death a couple years later, my mother had fallen into the trap. The booze might have numbed the pain in her heart, but in the end, it had killed her.
